Nolan Quoted Regarding Campus Threat Assessment in Chronicle of Higher Education
Jeff Nolan of Dinse’s Higher Education Practice Group was quoted in an August 10, 2012 article of the Chronicle of the Higher Education, which is the leading weekly publication devoted to coverage of higher education issues. In the article, which was titled “Campus Threat Assessment Teams Face Complex Task of Judging Risk,” Mr. Nolan was quoted regarding the typical composition of multi-disciplinary threat assessment teams on college campuses, typical processes by which teams receive reports of concerning behavior, typical assessment and management strategies, and the importance of obtaining information regarding the whole picture of what may be affecting and motivating a person of concern.
McAndrew and Andreson Successfully Defended the Mountain School of Milton Academy
April 2, 2012. Karen McAndrew and Nicole Andreson successfully defended The Mountain School of Milton Academy in a catastrophic injury claim brought by a former student. A federal District Court jury in Rutland, Vermont returned a defendant’s verdict after a three-week trial.
Dinse Obtains Summary Judgment in Higher Education Case
Jeff Nolan and Sophie Zdatny obtained summary judgment on behalf of an institution of higher education in a suit brought by a student over its disciplinary process.
Cole Teaches Online Course for the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA)
December 14, 2011. Leigh Cole taught an online course for the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) on immigration law for colleges and universities, with fellow NACUA member Michael Pfahl, Associate Counsel at Kent State University. The course was designed for attorneys, paralegals and international education professionals seeking a foundational understanding of immigration for students and scholars and employment-based immigration on campus. The course was presented in November and December.
Nolan Presents on Campus Threat Assessment Issues at National Symposium
On November 11, 2011, Jeff Nolan presented a seminar at the ACPA’s Senior Student Affairs Officer Symposium in Washington D.C. The seminar, titled “Campus Threat Assessment and Management in 2011: What You Need to Know Now.” Jeff’s comments addressed current standards of care and best practices for developing campus threat assessment teams, and also covered recent issues related to revisions in the standards to be applied where a student may present a threat to him or herself.
Dinse Attorneys Participate in Higher Education Conference
On October 16, 17 and 18, 2011, Jeff Nolan and Sophie Zdatny of the firm’s Higher Education Practice Group participated in presentations at the University of Vermont’s Legal Issues in Higher Education Conference, which drew higher education administrators and attorneys from across the United States. Nolan and Zdatny co-presented the conference-opening general session to 300+ attendees regarding “Campus Threat Assessment and Management in 2011: What You Need to Know Now”, Nolan co-presented a session on “Emerging Legal and Scientific Issues Under the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act,” and Nolan co-presented a session on “What You Need to Know About the Attorney-Client Privilege”.
