David Gurtman receives Vermont Business Magazine’s Rising Stars Recognition award
We are pleased to announce that David Gurtman has received Vermont Business Magazine’s Rising Stars recognition award. He is among 40 award winners under the age of 40. Award recipients were selected by a panel of judges for their commitment to business growth, professional excellence and involvement in their communities.
David Gurtman joined the firm in 2006. Mr. Gurtman practices in the areas of business transactions, non-profit organizations and commercial real estate. Mr. Gurtman advises Vermont companies on legal issues impacting their business, including structuring and closing strategic acquisitions and dispositions, capital raising and financing transactions, the formation of corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships, supply and distribution agreements, and tax planning. His clients range from entrepreneurial startups to mature companies with operations within and outside of Vermont. He has also been involved in some of the largest renewable energy projects in the state and provides state and federal tax advice related to such projects. His practice also includes advising tax exempt organizations in entity organization and formation, recognition of their tax-exempt status and corporate governance matters including drafting bylaws and operating policies. Prior to joining Dinse, he served as a law clerk for the Vermont trial courts in Chittenden and Addison Counties. He currently serves on the Boards of CarShareVT, Chittenden County Bar Association, Leadership Champlain, and is member of the Vermont Business Roundtable.

Nolan presents several sessions at UVM Conference
Jeff Nolan of Dinse’s Higher Education Practice Group presented three sessions at the University of Vermont’s national Legal Issues in Higher Education Conference in October, 2014. Jeff co-presented the keynote update on recent developments in higher education law, co-presented a session on the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (“VAWA”) and Title IX, and co-presented a session on the relationship between VAWA obligations to respond to dating violence, domestic violence and stalking and the work of campus threat assessment teams.
Nolan Presents National Webinar on Sexual and Dating Violence and Campus Threat Assessment
During September, 2014, Jeff Nolan of Dinse’s Higher Education Practice Group co-presented a webinar sponsored by United Educators and the University Risk Management and Insurance Association. Colleges and universities from around the country participated in the webinar, which suggested that institutions should consider involving their campus threat assessment teams as appropriate when responding to reports of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking that are likely to be received given the requirements of the recently-enacted Violence Against Women Act amendments to the Clery Act.
American College of Trial Lawyers Names Ritchie E. Berger to its Board of Regents
Dinse, Knapp & McAndrew, P.C. is pleased to announce that the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) has appointed Ritchie E. Berger to its Board of Regents, the first lawyer from Vermont to be chosen. ACTL is composed of the best trial lawyers from the United States and Canada.
Mr. Berger is a Director of the firm and head of its Litigation Section. His practice concentrates on the defense of complex civil litigation throughout Vermont and New England.
Mr. Berger also regularly lectures and conducts seminars on trial topics, is co-author of Vermont Jury Instructions, and serves on the U.S. District Court of Vermont’s Civil Jury Instruction Committee.

Nolan presents seminars on sexual violence prevention, threat assessment and workplace violence prevention
In April, 2014, Jeff Nolan of Dinse’s Higher Education and Employment practice groups presented a session on Campus SaVE Act implementation and training at the University Risk Management and Insurance Association’s Northeastern Regional Conference in Wellesley, Massachusetts, a session on workplace threat assessment and reintegration of “scary” employees into the workplace at the BLR Safety Summit in Atlanta, Georgia, and a session on threat assessment and the law at the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety Threat Assessment Conference in Richmond, Virginia.
Nolan presents Campus SaVE Act seminar and leads discussion group
Jeff Nolan of Dinse’s Higher Education Practice Group recently participated in the National Association of College and University Attorneys’ Spring Conference in Miami, which focused on “Student Sexual Misconduct: Addressing Institutional Culture and Compliance.” Jeff co-presented a session on the changes to institutional policies and practices required by the Campus SaVE Act, which went into effect March 7, 2014 and requires colleges and universities to respond to and provide training regarding domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. Jeff also co-led a discussion group regarding how institutions should work with local law enforcement where on-campus misconduct may also implicate the criminal justice system.

Amy McLaughlin, Jeff Nolan and Sophie Zdatny will be hosting a day long Master Class on the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center on January 23rd.
Leigh Cole Served as Faculty for Online Course by NACUA
Leigh recently served as faculty for a one-month online course by the National Association of College and University Attorney (NACUA) with colleague Michael Pfahl, Esq., Associate Counsel, Kent State University. The course was entitled “Immigration Basics for Colleges and Universities.” The course first was hosted by NACUA in 2011 and NACUA scheduled the course again with the same faculty this year.
